The mission statement of the Australian Network for Plant Conservation is to "Promote and develop plant conservation in Australia" Since 1770, more than 60 species of Australian plants have become extinct (as far as we can tell) and over 1100 are under threat. Australian plants continue to be threatened by our increasing need for space and natural resources. The main causes of change to Australia's vegetation since European settlement have been large-scale clearing and cultivation of land, followed by grazing, then industrial and urban development and weed competition. All have taken their toll on Australia's unique flora.
The Colong Foundation is the longest-serving community advocate for wilderness in Australia. Our campaigns have secured over a million hectares of national parks, most of which is wilderness but a further million hectares of threatened forests in NSW need urgent protection. This site provides the information you need to help secure these areas and others across the nation. Hopefully it will inspire a dozen new campaigns to save these precious areas.
Environment Centre NT is the peak environment group in the Territory. We rely heavily on our members, both to help direct and run the Environment Centre's activities and for the contribution that membership subscriptions make to our limited resources.
The Environmental Defenders Office (NT) Inc. is a public interest community legal centre practising environmental law. We offer legal services to individuals and groups who want to protect the natural and built environment and who can't afford private legal assistance. We also conduct community education programs about environmental law and seek reform of environmental laws where appropriate.

Australian Plants
Australia's Virtual Herbarium Australia's Virtual Herbarium (AVH) is an on-line botanical information resource accessible via the web. It provides immediate access to the wealth of data associated with scientific plant specimens in each Australian herbarium. Six million specimen records, of particular value in displaying geographic distribution, will be enhanced by images, descriptive text and identification tools. The AVH is a collaborative project of the State, Commonwealth and Territory herbaria. It is being developed under the auspices of the Council of Heads of Australian Herbaria (CHAH), representing the major Australian collections.
Australian Plant Name Index database is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names, not only those in current use, but also those names used in the past - synonyms no longer in use for a variety of technical nomenclatural reasons. APNI is the standard dataset for plant names in Australia, containing more than 80,000 names.

Flora of Australia online delivers the landmark publication series Flora of Australia to a potentially vast audience. This comprehensive, scientific resource demonstrates the Australian Government's commitment to ensuring Australia remains a world leader in taxonomy and managing, presenting and using biodiversity knowledge. This online resource is a result of collaboration between the Australian Biological Resources Study and national and international botanical communities and institutions.
FloraBase is the authoritative source for information about the Western Australian flora.
TELOPEA is published by the National Herbarium of New South Wales, Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust. It covers the field of systematic botany in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, specialising in the flora of New South Wales. TELOPEA is published twice yearly. As from Volume 9(1) 2000, full text of papers is available from this site in pdf format as a free service. Earlier volumes will be added progressively. We welcome comments and suggestions.

In keeping with most botanic gardens around the world, Darwin's Botanic Gardens has its "friends". We are people with a passion for plants and a love of gardening. Many of us have special interests in specific plant groups. We like to share our knowledge and enthusiasm so that others develop an appreciation not only for the Gardens, but the plant world in general.
Landcare Australia builds partnerships between communities, businesses and governments to care for Australia's environment now and for future generations. The Landcare Council of the Northern Territory (LCNT) is the peak community and industry body advising the NT Government on natural resource management issues in the Territory. It caters for people interested in Australia's native flora whether that interest is simple appreciation of the beauty and diversity of the flora or whether it extends to propagation, cultivation and conservation. This site is based on the guide leaflet for the Aboriginal Trail at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. The trail is an interpretive walk focussing on plants used by the Australian Aboriginals.
The Palm & Cycad Societies of Australia (PACSOA) is a group of affiliated, semi-autonomous, regional Palm and/or Cycad Societies headed by a Board presently based in Brisbane, Queensland. The Societies adopted the present structure in 1984 after having previously been an informal information exchange. At that time there was established the quarterly magazine, formerly Magazine of the Palm & Cycad Society of Australia, now PALMS & CYCADS, publishing articles of both non-technical and technical content, of interest to the palm and/or cycad enthusiast; and a Bookstore which offers substantial discounts on retail prices of palm and cycad books and publications, most of which are unobtainable elsewhere in Australia. Since 1984 there has also been established a Publication Fund which, since 1987, has published eight original works in book form.
